Cozy in a cabin
From Norway on March 15, 2009Ah, yes! Easter holiday in a cabin, a fire crackling, good food in your stomach and good company to boot. It might be too much to ask for. But we`ve already had a "test trip" to check out the cabin we`re going to occupy this Easter.
Just to be on the safe side, we attempt a trial run of the route ahead of time, when we`re not familiar with an area. I figure it`s better to get lost during the daytime and not depending on finding shelter, than spending hours searching in the dark when we do. And it also turned out to be a very nice day out.
There is a ferry line either we go via Stavanger or Sandnes. The online map of the Norwegian Yellow pages told us the Stavanger-Tau route would be shorter, but we chose the Lauvvik-Oanes ferry instead. Mainly because it was only a 10-minute crossing, as opposed to the 50-minute one from Stavanger. I guess the Yellow pages didn`t calculate that.
And it turned out great as well. Despite being oblivious of the ferry timetable, we arrived at the quay just as the ferry was about to leave. We drove straight onboard, and it took off seconds later. And the drive was just about 15 minutes longer than it would be from Tau. So we saved 40 minutes taking the other ferry (each direction), calculating in the extra driving time we saved a total of 50 minutes. We also paid about half the price of the other ferry, and also saved the price of the toll road we would have had to use. And we had better scenery taking this route. A good deal, I think.
Having already entered the coordinates of our destination into the gps , we found it easily enough. To my surprise, we drove straight to the cabin. Which I`m not used to. Normally, there`s always some problem with the numbers, or the road doesn`t exist anymore (or yet), and we have to ask the locals when we think we`re in the general area. Nope. This time, it was spot on. To the meter. Amazing.
And it was a nice place as well. Will write more about it when we`re there. Finally, I`d like to brag a little about the return trip. Driving towards the ferry again, we found out we would arrive close to departure time. And we did, with just a minute to spare. Lucky, for a change, eh?
